The National Academy of Construction has honored two School of Civil and Environmental Engineering alumni as part of its 2017 membership class.

The academy announced 29 new members in late May, including Bill Calhoun Jr. and Leo Vecellio Jr.

“I am a truly humbled to be asked into such an esteemed group of accomplished people,” said Calhoun, a 1981 civil engineering graduate.

“It is an honor to be selected for the National Academy of Construction,” Vecellio said. “I look forward to joining my esteemed colleagues as we contribute our insights and experience to benefit not only the industry, but the nation as well.”

Vecellio finished his civil engineering master’s degree in 1969. He is chairman, president and CEO of Vecellio Group, which provides construction and construction materials as well as advanced energy services and products through nine subsidiaries.

Calhoun is vice chairman and executive vice president of Clark Construction. He’s also a member of the Georgia Tech College of Engineering Advisory Board, the School’s Construction Advisory Board, and an emeritus member of the School’s External Advisory Board.

The academy will officially induct Calhoun, Vecellio and the other new members in late October at the group’s annual meeting. The pair joins fellow civil engineering alumnus and Georgia Tech President Emeritus G. Wayne Clough, who became a National Academy of Construction member in 2016.
