Civil engineering program 7th in the world, 3rd in U.S. in new global rankings

Georgia Tech's civil engineering program ranked No. 7 in the world in a new listing of the best civil programs around the globe.Georgia Tech routinely ranks among the United States’ premiere civil engineering programs.

Now a new listing of the best universities around the globe confirms Georgia Tech is one of the premiere places on Earth to become a civil engineer.

Tech’s civil engineering program ranked seventh in the world, according to ShanghaiRanking, the group that produces the annual Academic Ranking of World Universities. The group released its first-ever evaluations of individual engineering programs June 15.

“Our School continues to push the boundaries of knowledge and develop new ways of engaging the next generation of the world’s civil engineers,” said Reginald DesRoches, the Karen and John Huff School Chair. “This latest recognition speaks to those efforts, and it is gratifying to be included among such prestigious company.”

The new assessment measures a program’s research publications and the quality of those studies to calculate a ranking, taking into account the volume of published research, the number of times those studies have been cited, and how often studies include international or corporate collaborators. The ShanghaiRankings Consultancy looked back at five calendars years from 2010 to 2014 to develop its list.

“Our continued success is a direct reflection of the top students we attract from every corner of the globe and the work of our elite faculty,” DesRoches said. “They are changing the world everyday in their labs and in the classroom. And of course we couldn’t do what we do without the enthusiastic support of our alumni around the world.”

The 2016 ratings included 100 different universities’ civil engineering programs. Among programs in the United States, Georgia Tech was third behind Purdue University and the University of California, Berkeley.
