Slater receives Laboon award for academic, co-op excellence

Civil engineering undergraduate Corinna Slater has won this year’s Joe T. Laboon Award for co-op students, recognizing her academic and on-the-job excellence.

Slater has been working with Norfolk Southern’s Industrial Development department and will finish her co-op assignment this summer.

“I have gained invaluable industry experience as well as life experience,” Slater said. “I learned what it is like to work in the real world with real people. This is a skill that cannot be taught in the classroom.”

Slater said she feels well prepared to make an impact because of her co-op experience and will pursue a master’s degree in civil engineering after she graduates.

“I would highly recommend a co-op experience to other students,” she said. “Job experience paired with a great education is what makes students truly well rounded.”
